Funding is key to nurturing the resistance, creativity, and sustainability of the people powering the Reproductive Justice movement. Currently, less than 2% of traditional philanthropic funding goes to feminist and gender justice causes, and within that group, only a few cents go to abortion justice efforts.

At this critical moment in history, when we face oppressive stigma-driven efforts pushing for criminalization and restriction of abortions and bodily autonomy worldwide, we believe in strengthening our collective commitment to nurturing and funding vital abortion justice work.

To gain more clarity and build knowledge, inroads partnered with Women Spaces Africa for a collaborative effort to explore fundraising challenges for grassroots groups working towards abortion justice worldwide.

We gathered insights from 47 abortion movement leaders involved in fundraising for their organizations and collectives in different countries, which allowed us to better understand our movement’s challenges in mobilizing resources for its vital work. 

From this exploration, a clear reality emerged: 

Most community abortion justice groups receive very limited funding, most of which is restricted project-based grants that do not foster their overall sustainability. They rely mostly on volunteer work and in-kind material donations to sustain their work.

To support the global abortion justice ecosystem, we are publicly sharing the key insights with what we learned about the main barriers, challenges, and opportunities to support grassroots movements driving transformation for abortion access, rights, and justice for all.
